Consulting
All of our consulting relationships
incorporate a few core principles:
The whole system
is the client
Some families that come to us are experiencing difficulties primarily in their family relationships, others in their operating businesses. Still others are most concerned with ownership and shareholder issues.
We believe that it is not possible in a family enterprise to bring about meaningful, lasting change in one of these areas without taking into account the others. For that reason, in our approach to consulting, we
always consider the client’s whole “system” – family, business, and ownership.
There are no ‘quick fixes’
Building a solid foundation for the future of the business and the family requires time and commitment. We prefer to establish long-term, ongoing relationships with clients. Most of our projects last for at least a year or two. A typical relationship begins with an initial assessment and a period of intensive planning and organizational change, followed by periodic follow-up to monitor progress and discuss developing concerns and needs. The work may intensify when a critical turning point is reached – for example, during the final stages of a leadership transition.
Broad experience is valuable, but each client system is unique
The projects we recommend are always specific, tailored to the client’s goals, cost-effective, and in keeping with the highest ethical standards. All projects begin with learning about the particular needs and resources of the client system (the
Continuity Audit), and we view the family as active collaborators in designing change, so that plans are both effective and practical.
Most of our consulting work is centered in one of the following five categories:
